curating my artprize experience: screwed rapids

maybe it’s my love of really good street art and graff, after having lived in a european city that honors the true art of the genre and for a long time provided a block-long wall of the modern art museum’s courtyard for legal graffiti.

maybe it’s the fact that they posted their progress day by day, and i got to see their process as artists.

maybe it was meeting the charming artists on the opening night of artprize, comparing bits of the work to guston, learning to talk about something having SWAG (or being swag? i don’t know. sorry guys.), finding out that most of the artists had art degrees and the one that didn’t was currently studying printmaking and so was including carving into the work, as if making a block to be used to print images.

maybe it was the idea of working with a group of artists on a large project that won my heart.

maybe it was learning that most of the artists would not call themselves graffiti artists.

maybe it was that i could keep looking, and discovering more. i wanted to spend more time with it.

.

but i did, indeed, get charmed by screwed rapids.
