six years ago today, at this time (real time, with barcelona being 6 hours later than grand rapids, michigan), we had been married in a park and were finishing our reception meal. we were probably getting ready to cut our wedding cake, which i insisted on making (red velvet with cream cheese frosting) because cakes in spain are, well, they’re not like the cakes you’re used to. i was refraining from telling my husband about the american tradition of stuffing cake in each other’s faces, and thankfully none of our american guests let the cat out of the bag either.
i wanted to share with you a photo from that day, but sadly i can’t find that CD right now, so instead i’ll share a self-portrait we took last year on our 5th anniversary.
now, today, we’re waiting for the arrival of our first child, the next official milestone.
but we’ve had many unofficial milestones along the way, having lived in two countries and traveled in two others together, lived in countless apartments and bought two houses, turned a run-down house into a home, a house next door into a community, and a neglected yard into a garden. we have lived out loud and loved well.
today, i am thankful for a man that makes my life richer, is right next to me along the crazy journey, and still somehow thinks i’m great. i am blessed to have a soulmate, someone i can sit next to as we say to each other,
you’re the one that understands my crazy head.
