i cannot tell you how thrilled i was when i walked in to kendall college of art and design and found jonathan brilliant’s ArtPrize entry in their gallery. i am afraid i interrupted everyone’s conversation who was in the gallery, making sure they knew that no glue was used to hold his work together-all of these coffee stir sticks are holding each other up solely from the tension created by weaving them together.
and so gorgeous, for such a simple material. unlike the bemoaned “look it’s a big thing made out of small things!” theme, this artist completely transforms his material into a lush organic space. the fact that his material was chosen to speak about his creation as an artist also elevates this work above the category mentioned: there is thoughtful choice behind the material here. it just really does not compare.
i had seen brilliant’s work before in pictures, but this year he has added these forms made out of the coffee cup sleeves (you know, to keep your hands from getting too hot?) and once again utilized an unassuming object and turned it into something other-worldly.

so glad to see brilliant’s work in ArtPrize this year. hoping others are noticing him too.
